What Does a Generac Automatic Transfer Switch Do?
Today Freddie America Electrical installed a Generac automatic transfer switch in preparation for a whole-home standby generator installation.
A transfer switch is one of the most important parts of a standby generator system. It acts as the connection point between your home's electrical system, utility power, and the generator.
Under normal conditions, your home receives electricity from the utility. When utility power fails, the generator starts and the automatic transfer switch safely transfers the home's selected electrical load from the utility source to generator power. When utility power returns and stabilizes, the system transfers the home back to utility power and the generator can shut down.
Why install the transfer switch first?
Installing and preparing the transfer switch ahead of the generator can make the final generator installation much more straightforward. The electrical infrastructure is already being put in place, so when the generator is ready to be connected and commissioned, much of the major electrical work has already been completed.
Think of it as preparing the house for the generator before the generator arrives.
A whole-home generator isn't simply a generator sitting outside your house. The generator, automatic transfer switch, electrical service, load management and proper installation all work together as one system.
